In short
Digital money spraying is the Nigerian tradition of showering celebrants with money, done from your phone instead of with cash. With Nawó, guests scan the event's QR code and spray naira in real time; the notes fall on screen, the money lands in the celebrant's wallet instantly, and a live leaderboard shows the top sprayers in the room.
Money spraying, in brief
At Nigerian weddings, birthdays and owambes, guests dance up to the celebrants and shower them with money. It's an expression of joy, generosity and status, and for many families the highlight of the party. Digital spraying keeps all of that and drops the cash.
How it works on Nawó
- Fund your wallet in the Nawó app by card or bank transfer. Your balance is ready the moment the top-up lands.
- Join the event by scanning its QR code: at the entrance, on your table or on screen.
- Pick who you're spraying, choose the denomination and amount, and swipe to spray. Tap “Make It Rain” to send a whole bundle at once.
- Watch your sprays fall on screen and climb the live leaderboard as the room cheers.
- The celebrant receives every spray in their wallet in real time and withdraws to their bank account.
No app? Spray from your browser
Guests don't have to install anything. Scanning the event QR code opens the event in your phone's browser: verify a Nigerian phone number, add spray credit by card, and spray. The credit is for that event only, and any unspent balance is refunded to your card when your session ends.
Digital spraying vs cash
| Cash spraying | Digital spraying with Nawó | |
|---|---|---|
| Before the party | ATM queues, or buying new notes from sellers | Top up your wallet in seconds |
| The law | Spraying naira notes is an offence (CBN Act 2007, s.21) | No banknotes involved |
| What the celebrant receives | Whatever is picked up off the floor and counted | Every naira, in their wallet, in real time |
| Record of who gave what | None | Every spray recorded with sender and time |
| Safety | Cash on you, notes go missing | Verified wallets, nothing to lose |
| The moment | Notes in the air | Notes on screen, plus a live leaderboard |
Spraying naira notes at parties is an offence under Nigerian law; see the CBN Act explained.

Frequently asked questions
Do guests need the Nawó app to spray?
No. Guests can scan the event QR code and spray from their phone's browser after verifying a Nigerian phone number and adding spray credit by card. The app adds a reusable wallet, withdrawals and spray history.
How does the celebrant get the money?
Every spray lands in the celebrant's Nawó wallet in real time, and they withdraw it to their own bank account from the app.
Is digital money spraying safe?
Yes. Nawó wallet holders are identity-verified, payments run through licensed payment providers, and every spray is recorded, so there's no cash to lose.
Can I still make it rain?
Yes. “Make It Rain” sprays a whole bundle at once, with the notes falling on screen for everyone to see.
Can I spray anonymously?
Yes. In the Nawó app you can spray anonymously and appear on the public leaderboard as a “Ghost”, with your rank and amount but not your name. The host still sees who sprayed.
