How to spray money at a Nigerian wedding

Updated · 6 min read · By the Nawó team

In short

Spray when the couple dances in or when the MC calls family and friends to the floor. Dance up to the couple, spray steadily rather than all at once, and save it for the moments set aside for it. To spray without cash (and within the law), scan the wedding's Nawó QR code and spray from your phone: the money goes straight to the couple.

When to spray

  • The couple's grand entrance, as they dance into the hall
  • The couple's first dance
  • When the MC calls family groups, friends or colleagues to the floor
  • Special dances, such as the parents' dance or the bride's change of outfit

Follow the MC: spraying usually happens in these set moments, not throughout the meal.

How to spray gracefully

  • Dance up to the couple; spraying is part of the celebration, not a quick hand-over.
  • Spray steadily, a note at a time, rather than dumping a bundle; the show is the point.
  • Spray close and gently. Don't throw money at faces.
  • Don't pick up money from the floor: with cash, the couple's helpers gather it.
  • Spray what you can comfortably afford; there's no fixed amount, and every spray counts.
  • Rather keep it private? Spray anonymously in the Nawó app: you show on the leaderboard as a “Ghost”, and only the event's host sees it was you.

How to spray without cash

Spraying naira notes is an offence under Section 21 of the CBN Act 2007, and people have been prosecuted after videos of them spraying at parties went online. Digital spraying keeps the moment without the risk; see the law explained.

  1. Scan the wedding's Nawó QR code, from the invitation, your table or the screen.
  2. Spray in the Nawó app, or from your browser with no download: verify your phone number and add spray credit by card.
  3. When the couple takes the floor, pick them, choose the denomination and amount, and swipe. Tap “Make It Rain” for a whole bundle.
  4. Your sprays fall on screen and count toward the live leaderboard.

For the couple and families

  • Create the wedding as an event in the Nawó app before the day.
  • Put the QR code on invitations, table cards, the entrance and the screen.
  • Brief your MC to announce it before each spraying moment, and to call out the leaderboard.
  • Every spray arrives in your wallet as it happens. After the party, withdraw to your bank account: no counting, no missing money, and a record of every spray.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spray at a Nigerian wedding?

There's no fixed amount. Spray what you can comfortably afford; how you spray, dancing with the couple, matters as much as how much.

When do you spray money at a Nigerian wedding?

During the couple's entrance and first dance, and when the MC calls family and friends to the floor. Follow the MC's lead.

Is it okay to spray money digitally at a wedding?

Yes. Digital spraying keeps the tradition, with the notes falling on screen and a live leaderboard, and the couple receives every naira instantly. It also avoids spraying naira notes, which is an offence in Nigeria.

What happens to the money sprayed digitally?

It lands in the couple's Nawó wallet in real time, and they withdraw it to their bank account whenever they like.
