How to host a cashless owambe

Updated · 5 min read · By the Nawó team

In short

Set up your party as an event on Nawó, put its QR code on your invitations, tables and screen, and ask your MC to announce it before every spraying moment. Guests spray from the Nawó app or their phone's browser, the money lands in your wallet as it's sprayed, and you withdraw it to your bank after the party: no cash to collect, count or lose.

Why go cashless

  • Your guests don't need to queue at ATMs or buy new notes from sellers, which is itself naira abuse.
  • There's nothing to collect, count or lose, and nobody to trust with the money.
  • You receive every naira, as it's sprayed.
  • Every spray is recorded, so nothing goes missing, and you can see who sprayed for your thank-yous.
  • It keeps the party within the law: spraying naira notes is an offence (the law explained).
  • The live leaderboard adds energy to the room.

Two weeks before

  1. Download Nawó and verify your identity, so you can receive sprays and withdraw them to your bank.
  2. Create your party as an event in the app and get its QR code.
  3. Add the QR code to your invitations and e-invites, with a line such as “We're spraying digitally: scan to spray”.
  4. Tell your planner, MC and DJ that the party is cashless.

On the day

  1. Put the QR code at the entrance and on table cards, and show it on screen if you have one.
  2. Have your MC announce it at the start, and again before each spraying moment: your entrance, the first dance, the family dances.
  3. Ask the MC to call out the leaderboard: friendly competition between tables keeps the energy up.
  4. Save a “Make It Rain” moment for a big entrance: guests can spray a whole bundle at once.
  5. Rather keep sprayers' names private? Make the event anonymous: the leaderboard shows “Ghost” instead of names, and you still see who sprayed.

Guests without the app can still spray: scanning the QR code opens the event in their phone's browser, where they verify a Nigerian phone number and add spray credit by card. Any credit they don't use is refunded to their card.

After the party

  • Every spray is already in your Nawó wallet; there's nothing to count.
  • Withdraw to your bank account whenever you like.
  • Thank your guests: as the host you can see who sprayed, including guests who sprayed anonymously.

For planners and venues

Running events regularly? Venues and promoters can run cashless, leaderboard-powered events and earn a revenue share on every spray: see Nawó for Business and how clubs and lounges earn from digital spraying.

Frequently asked questions

Do my guests need to download an app?

No. Guests can scan your event's QR code and spray from their phone's browser. Guests who already use Nawó can spray from the app.

When do I get the money?

Each spray lands in your Nawó wallet as it happens, and you can withdraw to your bank account whenever you like.

What if some guests still bring cash?

Ask your MC to remind guests that spraying naira notes is against the law, and to point them to the QR code on their table.

Can I see who sprayed?

Yes. Every spray is recorded, and as the host you see who sprayed. Guests can choose to spray anonymously, which hides their name from everyone else at the party (they show as a “Ghost” on the leaderboard), but not from you.
